Discover how foreign influences have affected North American period fashions at Fashion Fusion Fiesta, a Feb. 6 breast cancer benefit at the Burnaby campus’ Diamond Alumni Centre. Organized by an SFU team supporting the Weekend to End Breast Cancer, the event features costumes and commentary by fashion historian Ivan Syers. Couture Inside Out: The construction secrets of haute couture fashion, 1900 to 2000 : What is haute couture? What is prêt-a-porter? What is a licensed copy? What is a knock-off? Vancouver costumer Patrice Godin answered these questions during a presentation exploring the aesthetics and techniques of fit and construction that define haute couture sewing.
Slides and garments from the collection of the Original Costume Museum Society, Ivan Sayers, Claus Jahnke, and others illustrated this talk about the finest clothing made in the twentieth century.
One of the models, Mary Lou, modeled an evening dress, adorned by a gorgeous feather display constructed into a distinctive hat. Claus Jahke, collector of fine vintage garments, describes the provenance of this hat as follows:
" What a fantastic photo of Mary-Lou in the cocktail hat !
The hat is from the Salon of FRIEDL Stauber-Stendel MUENCHEN / MUNICH. Her millinery is of the Couture Genre and this creation from the 50's is a wonderful example of the post- war Wirtschafts Wunder/economic miracle of Germany and Europe."
Special Event guest, Constance de Grandmaison, former house model for Chanel, was also present.
A near-full audience came to learn valuable hints that can be incorporated into your own fashion world.

Driving Through The Decades...Fashion At The Steamworks Concourse d'Elegance 2006 : In an impressive display of grandeur, history and passion, almost a kilometer of classic and vintage cars were lined up along Gas Towns historic attraction, Water Street, the street with the Steam clock, a street with Vancouver history reaching back so many years. It was, once again, the Steamworks Concours d'Elegance, classic car show.
Laurel Gurnsey, wife of Colin, an avid car collector (a co-chair of the Steamworks Concours d'Elegance, also one of the judges), with a flair for history acted as a veritable dynamo and catalyst in creating this fashion event for the ladies.
Colin Gurnsey was a huge part of the team that planned the car event and has worked tirelessly to support Eli Gershkovitch (the host of the Steamworks Restaurant < http://www.martiniboys.com/Vancouver/Steamworks-Brewing-review.html)
I was concerned that many of the ladies who come to the event with their husbands often don't know each other and also have nothing special for them to do during the day. So I initiated a ladies' event. Last year we had Holt Renfrew bring models down and had a modern fashion show...
Laurel Gurnsey helped to organize the Vintage Fashion show, in fact in her own words I contacted Ivan Sayers, found the sponsor, coordinated the food with the caterer, signed up the ladies, provided some of Ivan's requests (mirrors, water, etc.), and okayed the venue. (She managed lot) but it was impossible to carry out without the backing of so many other people. And nothing without Ivan's vitality and incredible knowledge. A very cool guy
So the connection with the fashion show and the car show is an historic one. One that brings the beauty and elegance of ladies' fashions together with the beauty and elegance of the heritage automobiles out on Water StreetRestoration is also an important linkage. Ivan has done an amazing job of preserving and restoring fashion. The entrants in the car event love their cars/bikes. There was a 1911 car on the street which has had only 2 owners. There was an 1896 steam motorcycle which belongs to the curator of the Guggenheim Museum in Chicago. There were Bugattis and Bentleys and a Horch. Cars from all over the Pacific Northwest. Many cars up from Seattle The food and actual location of the event were provided by the Steamworks Restaurant, especially the host, Eli Gershkovitch and his catering manager Marnie Burnett and the fabulous chef.
I also have to remind you that the actual payment for Ivan came through the sponsorship of Vancouver Lifestyles Magazine and their vice-president of operations, Julie Hamilton. They were very generous in their support and I mentioned them at the end of Ivan's show

I Haven't a Thing to Wear: A Revealing Look at Skin in Fashion History

As Valentine's Day nears, illustrations of naked (or nearly naked) cupids grace cards and candy boxes. Playful nudity, a sign of amorousness, is everywhere.

Ever since people started wearing clothes, they have been fascinated by nudity. How little can one wear and still be dressed? Can one be fully dressed and still appear indecent? How does what we see affect our perceptions of what we might see?

S Lee, who teaches at Kwantlen University College and in the Continuing Education Program at Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design, will examine the relationship of fashion to cultural views of the body in a provocative lecture and slide show. She will talk about the barely dressed body and how the nearly nude reflects fashions, politics, and social events from 25,000 BCE to the current day. Come see high glamour body painting by Patrice Godin.
